We are internationally accredited to provide the GLA:D exercise research program. We have accreditation for both the GLA:D for Backs program, as well as the GLA:D for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis.
Both programs are 8 weeks of in-clinic physio directed treatments. Your commitment is attending twice per week, at set times for each program. Because GLA:D is running a world-wide research study, no alterations can be made to the program. Your outcomes will be contributing to ongoing research into best management practices for people living with OA and back pain.
Our program is fee-for-service, meaning that you must pay to be a part of it. This is not part of the Saskatchewan Health Authority, nor it is associated or ‘covered’ by your provincial health card. GLA:D is provided directly by either a physiotherapist or chiropractor, so if you have extra insurance (blue cross, manulife, GMS, etc) and you have allied health as part of your plan, you can submit your receipts for reimbursement.
There are 16 sessions over 8 weeks. It is a flat rate fee for the entire program, no changes can be made, regardless of attendance. It is expected that you complete the research questionnaires sent by GLA:D to bolster their studies.
Please call the clinic at 306.779.1275 or send an email to reception@brownstonehealth.ca to register for either program.
GLA:D for Backs
https://gladinternational.org/glad-back/
GLA:D® BACK is a treatment option for patients with persistent or recurrent low back pain that affects everyday life. The program was developed by researchers and clinicians at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU).
The program follows the Danish National Board of Health’s clinical guideline recommendations for the treatment of patients with back pain and is based on principles of self-management similar to GLA:D® for patients with knee and hip pain.
GLA:D® BACK consists of:
- EDUCATION of chiropractors and physiotherapists in running GLA:D® BACK courses for patients.
- TREATMENT PROGRAM consisting of education and a structured exercise program
- REGISTRATION of patient data in the GLA:D® registry
The purpose of GLA:D® BACK is to help patients manage their back pain better themselves through a well-described and structured course of treatment. SDU therefore teaches physiotherapists and chiropractors to offer patient education and exercise based on the best evidence. Registrations in a clinical registry ensure that the results are documented and that, together, we create new knowledge about back pain, so that GLA:D® BACK can be continuously improved.
Patient education and supervised exercise for patients with persistent back pain are recommended as first-line interventions in Danish and international guidelines based on expert reviews of hundreds of randomized controlled trials. Patient education and exercise have positive effects on back problems and little risk of harms. At the same time, education and exercise have been shown to prevent new episodes of back pain. Evidence and theories behind GLA:D® BACK have been published BioMed Central (BMC) Musculoskeletal Disorders.
GLAD BACK Development, Theories and Scientific Evidence
The program is designed for patients with persistent and/or recurrent back pain that negatively affects their everyday life and function. The patient and the therapist jointly decide whether GLA:D® BACK is relevant. As with any other treatment, the decision about patient participation in a GLA:D® BACK course is based on a clinical assessment and patient preference.
GLA:D Hip & Knee program
https://gladinternational.org/glad-hip-and-knee/ GLA:D® represents an evidence-based treatment plan for knee and hip osteoarthritis consisting of patient education and neuromuscular exercise with the overarching aim of implementing current clinical guidelines for osteoarthritis into clinical care.
Three mandatory elements of GLA:D®
- Education of physical therapists in delivering patient education and neuromuscular exercise training
- Two sessions of patient education and a minimum of 6 weeks of neuromuscular exercise for patients at the individual GLA:D® units
- Registration of patient data in the national GLA:D®
registry.
The GLA:D® Program for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis includes 2 x education sessions and 12 x group exercise sessions delivered over 6 weeks. The education sessions cover a range of topics including; understanding osteoarthritis, its signs and symptoms, available treatment options and self-management strategies. The exercise sessions includes a range of exercises, targeting strength and endurance of the hip and knee muscles, along with neuromuscular exercises, which target joint control and stability.
